  • The Horizon: This is the apparent line where the sky meets the Earth, forming the boundary of our observable universe. It serves as a fundamental reference point, marking the edge of the celestial sphere.
  • Zenith and Nadir: The zenith is the point directly overhead, while the nadir is the point directly beneath the observer, marking the opposite pole on the celestial sphere. These two points define the vertical axis of our celestial perspective.



Early Systems of Celestial Navigation:

Ancient civilizations, from the Egyptians to the Greeks, developed ingenious ways to track celestial movements. They utilized the horizon as a reference point, observing the rising and setting of stars along this boundary.

  • Azimuth: This coordinate describes the direction of a celestial object from the observer, measured along the horizon. For example, an object due north would have an azimuth of 0 degrees, while one due east would have an azimuth of 90 degrees.
  • Angular Height (Altitude): This coordinate measures the vertical position of a celestial object above the horizon, ranging from 0 degrees (on the horizon) to 90 degrees (at the zenith).
